A SIPOC diagram is a tool often used during the start of an improvement program to capture all the relevant information about the process that is being reviewed.

While SIPOC are associated with the Six Sigma methodology they can also be used outside of this and are an excellent tool for process improvement brainstorming sessions as they are an effective and swift method of capturing and documenting key points.

While SIPOC diagrams can be created with paper and pen – we utilize SIPOC diagrams in an electronic format as they ensure a standard route is used in capturing and the data.

SIPOC diagrams are great at helping to clarify information and provides a standard assessment route by collecting specific information – the SIPOC process defines
• Who supplies into the process
• What inputs to the process exist
• What outputs does the process generate
• Who are the customers of the process outputs
We’ve created a SIPOC template utilizing Excel for which you can see the video here

Steps to create SIPOC diagram in Excel

1/ Create columns for each of the SIPOC categories
2/ Create an area for comments or information to be added
3/ Create a space for the process steps to documented (note we’ve added 5 boxes here to represent the process at a high level – you may need more – we’ve also added some arrows to indicate the process flow)
4/ Ensure you’re SIPOC template includes an area to capture the title of the process under investigation – it’s also good practice to add an author and template revision date to ensure that everyone is using the same document
5/ Format the resultant template so that it’s easy to understand and use.
