Six Sigma Green Belt Training
December 21, 2008 Articles

In our first article we looked at the six sigma organizational belt structure and the role of six sigma green belts – here in our second article we’ll take a detailed look at the green belt – how to get trained up and what to expect from the role.

As we discussed in our first article – a six sigma green belt carries out business improvement activities alongside their main job role – so for example they could be a machine shop cell leader as their main job but be required to lead improvement activities to reduce defects arising as part of their cells process.

For many workers their exposure to business improvement is carried out on the job, often without utilizing formal business improvement methodologies – and often through following the local in house “expert”. This may include a range of skills and methods but often takes place without a framework to follow that can deliver results – think of the individual tools that make up DMAIC but not the method of DMAIC itself. This approach while better than nothing fails to deliver its potential.

As we discussed in the first article from this series – becoming a green belt – ensures that there is rudimentary understanding of a proven formula for improvement, DMAIC, with exposure to the appropriate tools and systems to deliver results. The important difference for green belts is that the tools taught are the right mix to support the DMAIC framework which has both a proven pedigree and a step by step framework that is repeatable. This has the result of providing a higher rate of success for improvement projects and a business case for organizations to make the investment.

Given the recent growth in the use of six sigma – the industry has seen substantial development in the past 10 years with training providers in particular seeing huge growth in their market and these days there is a multitude of providers – indeed when it comes to training the potential six sigma green belt has a wealth of choice available not only in which course they take but also in which certification they aim for – these range from those offering “gold standard” certifications such as ASQ – to those offering their own or alternative certification – Almost all courses require the passing of a form of an examination to acquire the certification.
