We all know about Value stream mapping – it’s a really great tool for mapping information and material flows within a business – and while most will agree that using a simple paper and pen when running a value stream mapping workshop is best – there are a number of software packages on the market that can be used either during a mapping workshop or at the end to capture an electronic version of the completed map.

Microsoft Visio has been around for ages and until recently didn’t have built in support for value stream mapping meaning that if your running Visio 2003 or earlier you’ll need a stencil add-on to deploy the functionality you’ll need.

Luckily there’s a few places where you can download those – check out our list at the bottom of the page

For those running Visio 2007 – Value Stream Mapping functionality is built in – check out Example Value Stream Map on Visio 2007 Tutorial from Bizbodz.com. While it wont do some of the fancy auto-calculations for things like takt time that some dedicated software provides – it should be good enough for most.

Still using Office 2003 / Visio 2003 or earlier? – here’s a list of sites for Value Stream Mapping stencils (versions available for Visio and other office apps. (If you’ve got more feel free to list them in the comments section below.)
