What is Poka Yoke
December 9, 2008 Glossary

Poka Yoke is a Japanese business term that refers to the practice of mistake proofing.

Poka Yoke can take many forms but usually involves some sort of visual means or “tool” that indicates a successful process.

Reducing errors in a manufacturing process is key goal of six sigma and Poka Yoke helps prevent errors by ensuring that they cannot be produced within the process.

Various common examples of Poka Yoke exist – (check this site here http://facultyweb.berry.edu/jgrout/everyday.html) perhaps the most easy to convey is the example of white paint that goes on pink and dries white – therefore when painting over white areas – you can tell which area has been painted and which is yet to be painted.
