Whilst Value Stream Mapping has its origins in automotive manufacturing – as a method of capturing processes it can be used in many different environments.  Value stream Mapping is most commonly used in organizations which are looking to make improvements in lead times.

Value stream mapping is most commonly associated with manufacturing, however it can be used to great effect in areas such as supply chain, logisitcs and many service organizations.  For information on how Value Stream Mapping can be applied to the service organization check out the excellent book by Beau Keyte and Drew Locher The Complete Lean Enterprise: Value Stream Mapping for Administrative and Office Processes

One of the reasons that Value stream mapping is successful in many diverse organizations is that its method of capturing material and information flows can be applied to many businesses.  For example from the production of a sales order in a service organization – the manufacture of a component in a manufacturing organziation all rely on processing steps and inputs to achieve an output – Value Stream Mapping helps capture these in a consistent way and articulate them graphically in an easy to understand form.
